What this job actually is

Let's be straight with you before you fill anything out. You will be carrying furniture up and down basement stairs. You will load a truck in July heat and in January cold. You will move couches, mattresses, treadmills, refrigerators, hot tubs, and whatever else has been sitting in a garage since 2009. Some days are light and you're done early. Some days you go home sore.

You are also the face of this company. You'll be standing in someone's living room, often on a day that means something to them: a parent downsizing, an estate being settled, a house going on the market before a move. How you carry yourself in that room matters just as much as how much you can lift. We've built this business on people trusting us inside their homes, and every person on the truck protects that or damages it.

A normal day

You'll meet at the shop in the morning, check the truck, and head out with the day's schedule. Most days that's a handful of jobs spread across a few towns, so there's real windshield time between stops. At each job you'll walk the space with the customer, agree on what's going, and then load it. Between jobs and at the end of the day there are dump and donation runs, and the truck gets cleaned out before you're done.

It's not the same thing every day, and it's not a job where you sit still. Most people who like it here say that's the part they like.

What we offer

Beyond the money: you're working for a small local outfit, not a call center with a logo. The owner is on jobs. If something's wrong you talk to him directly, not to a district manager three states away. Do good work here and you won't have to wait for a review cycle for anybody to notice.

What we're looking for

Genuinely, no experience is needed. We can teach you how to wrap a door frame, break down a sectional, and load a truck so nothing shifts. We cannot teach you to want to be there. That part is on you.

• 18 or older
• A valid driver's license
• Able to lift 50 pounds or more, repeatedly, all day
• You show up on time, on the days you said you'd be there
• You can be polite and steady in a customer's home, including on their bad days
• You'd rather work hard with good people than coast somewhere boring

This is probably not the job for you if

• You want a job where you sit down most of the day
• Showing up on time is something you negotiate with yourself every morning
• You get quiet or short with people when the work gets heavy
• You're looking for two weeks of work to bridge a gap. We'd rather train someone who's staying
• You'd be uncomfortable being trusted alone in a stranger's home

None of that is a shot at anybody. Those jobs exist and they're fine jobs. This just isn't one of them, and it's better for both of us if you know that now.

How hiring works

1. You apply. The form takes about two minutes. Your phone number and your answer to the last question matter more to us than a resume.
2. We call. We call the people we want to talk to, usually within a week. Answer your phone or check your voicemail, because that's the only way we reach you.
3. Short conversation. In person or on the phone. Nothing formal, no suit. We want to hear how you talk about work.
4. A day on the truck. You ride along and work a real day, paid. You find out if you like it, and we find out how you move.
5. You're on the crew. If it's a fit on both sides, we get you scheduled.
